It's been a while since my last blog entry, so I'm excited about this opportunity to share a little piece of me again. School has kept me at bay, so much so that I've actually neglected some of my hobbies.
So, last week I decided to take a walk down memory lane and discovered my dear old iPod Nano, which has been packed away in a box for much too long! As I sat uploading my songs to iTunes (and listening to them one by one), I experienced such a rich blend of emotions, one after another. One minute, I was jumping around and smiling to 'Rainy Monday' by Shiny Toy Guns, the next I was near sulking to the sound of 'Your House' by Jimmy Eat World. From happiness, sadness, anger, pride, joy, you name it! It's amazing how much music can awaken the soul on every level, isn't it? I was taken back through every memory that was connected with every song as I listened to them again - things that I'd completely forgotten. I not only remembered where I was the last time I heard the song, but what I was wearing, how I felt, and all the other deatils of my life at that time. Then, I began to notice a pattern in the music (over 700 songs) that told a story of who I was back then. I was able to see how much I've grown and transformed over the years, yet I am still the same today. I was able to rediscover little parts of me that I'd somehow forgotten about, like how I impulsive and crazy I can be when I want to 'shake things up' just for fun! Mosh pits, trucker hats, black nail polish, techno & dancin til 5 AM on the beach...by rediscovering my music, I rediscovered a forgotten part of my story, and experienced a brief soul awakening! I firmly believe that our music tells about us because music is what feelings sound like. It's how we get in touch with things that we may not know how to (or want to) express. Everyone has that one song, that song that seems as if the songwriter scanned it directly from you heart. It resonates with you so deep on every level that hearing it puts you into an altered state of bliss...I've got a few of those! Music is a wonderful tool for getting in touch with your emotions because words can be soooo limiting, but sound is transcendent! Sound is the essence of life, wave by wave it actually moves physical matter and breaks up stagnation.
I encourage you to dig up some of your old tunes to see what you may have forgotten about your story. Who knows, you may rekindle a forgotten passion or experience your own brief soul awakening!
